The Castle Newsletter
Here we are, December has rolled around again. Dad used to call this the sleepy time of year because the days are
shorter, nights are longer, temperatures are lower, everything, including my dog, moves a little slower. We all
need that time in our lives, don't we? Unwind, enjoy friends and family, sip some great wines and yes, relax a
little. Well, a couple of weeks ago, as it started to get light, I looked out the window from my home office and
the ground was totally white. I pulled up my Adcon machine data for each vineyard to see the temps. Boy, was I
surprised! The Napa Valley Cabernet 19°, Sonoma Valley 'Ancient Vine' Zinfandel 22°, Russian River Valley
'Century Vine' Zinfandel 24°, Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet 26°, Redwood Valley Zinfandel 'Ricetti Ranch' 22°
and the Anderson Valley 'Julia's Vineyard' Pinot Noir 26°. We definitely set some new records in quite some
time for coldest days in December.
I love sitting by the open fire at our cabin in Anderson Valley, freezing cold outside, sometimes snow on the
ground, watching old family movies with family and friends, hearing the old stories and someone saying,
"Remember that, Steve?" as the movie plays or, "Do you have another bottle of that 2004 Ancient Vine
Zinfandel? It would go great with this piece of homemade blackberry pie, wouldn't it?"
It is the time of year we tend to look back over our lives, which reminds me; as I sat back in my chair this weekend
at the ranch, after
making all of our blends for the 2010 vintage we had some Napa Valley Petit Verdot left over, and I thought to
myself this is an impeccable wine on its own. As most of you know, Petit Verdot is mostly used to blend with
Bordeaux varietals, but this wine was amazing! Vivid vanilla, cedar and spice on the nose followed by flavors of
warm blackberries and ripe black cherries with a rich velvety plum finish that just lingered. It was by far the
best Petit Verdot I have ever tasted, so I had to bottle 70 cases of it. If you have ever wondered what Petit
Verdot is like on its own, you should try this wine—amazing, unique, exciting, special, and something you don't
want to miss.
This year was an amazing year overall. The grapes were of the best quality I have seen in years, and our
bottling of 2010 and some 2011 wines was just as impressive. A few are mentioned in this newsletter, and we
will be sending you emails as the wines are released; don't miss your opportunity to get these special wines.
Our little girl, Taylor Lynn has really grown. She will be 17 months in December and is absolutely amazing.
She has a 150 word vocabulary,
is potty trained, runs (not just walking), picks up every little thing you say or do, rides her rocking horse
by herself, repeats everyone's name when you introduce them and shakes their hand. She just takes my breath
away daily. She is the most lovable little girl you can imagine. Hope you enjoy the pictures.
Thank all of you for a wonderful year; it was nice to catch up with many of you during your travels out here.
You know how much I enjoy our chats and seeing your excitement for our wines and family.
We all wish you a very memorable Holiday Season and a very special New Year.
